Wanderlust Wedding Wednesdays: Our Suspended Cake

When choosing our wedding cake we knew we wanted something different, something that had the wow factor…

…and ours certainly had that!

When browsing Pinterest for the perfect cake we stumbled across a beautiful wedding which was similar in style to the theme we had in mind; rustic and organic with a touch of glamour.

The cake at this wedding was suspended from the floor and hung from a ribbon. We were blown away, it was absolutely perfect and nothing else would do.

After a small amount of research we found out that the talented bride actually made this cake herself! We emailed her immediately and arranged to meet and sample cake at her workshop.

Her name is Katie and her extra-special cake business is called; Couture Cakes.

As soon as we walked into her studio we knew we were in the presence of a true artist. There were display cabinets filled with stunning cake sculptures, cake designs and sketches pinned from wall to wall, a room filled with every type of cake decoration you can imagine and the sweet smell of a new creation baking in the oven.

We sat down and told Katie our vision and she instantly got to scribbling on a piece of paper, before our very eyes our design came to life.

A four-tiered suspended cake, adorned with edible gold sequins and trailing flowers hanging from the bottom (supplied by Michele Gledhill).

It was dramatic and a real show-stopper, our guests had never seen anything like it before.

Each of our four tiers were different flavours… we just couldn’t choose!

The top tier was traditional sponge with raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream, the second tier was carrot cake with orange buttercream, the third tier was lemon sponge with lemon buttercream and the final tier was chocolate cake with Belgium chocolate ganache. Something for everyone!

Katie even made the sweets and treats herself which we displayed in glass jars on two vintage light-green dressers.

Some of the hand-made treats included; dipped pretzels, profiteroles, nougatine and raspberry and almond meringues.

We then made our own personalised sweet bags so people could take them home with them, this was instead of traditional favours.

Our guests reaction to the cake was incredible, nobody had seen anything like it before and it’s the one thing people haven’t stopped talking and asking about since our big day!
