Our Thai Honeymoon: Part 2 (Elephant Hills, Khao Sok National Park)

After seven days and seven nights at The Shore in Katathani it was time to move on to the next part of our honeymoon adventure.

After a three hour drive we arrived at the Elephant Hills jungle camp in Khao Sok National Park.

We were welcomed by the lovely staff and shown to our tent in the jungle that we’d be staying in for the first night.

Going from 5* luxury to a tent with no electricity, no hot water and no air con was definitely an experience… although it did come with a hammock!

We soon got used to the simplicity of living out here, it was refreshing and made us feel so close to all the nature that was surrounding us.

Adventure was upon us and we got straight to it, first up was a guided canoe safari down the Sok River.

After an hour or so on the river we sat down for a spot of lunch (possibly the best traditional Thai food we had during our entire trip was consumed whilst at Elephant Hills!).

We mingled with all the other guests, many of whom were also honeymooners so we all took it in turns to bore each other with endless stories of our wedding day and planning woes.

After lunch it was time to meet the elephants… the main attraction of this three day experience. They certainly did not disappoint!

Elephants have such lovely temperaments, for such grand animals they are so peaceful and playful. We could sit and watch them play for hours.

After playtime it was time to wash the gentle giants, we were given a hose and the coarse skin of a coconut shell and got to scrubbing.

The elephants absolutely loved it, taking the opportunity to fill their trunks with water and returning the favour by showering us too!

We then got to prepare the elephants lunch; cutting up pineapples, sugar canes and bunches of bananas to hand feed to them.

They are a hungry bunch… adult Asian elephants can eat up to 300 pounds of food every single day, that’s a lot of chopping for us and a lot of munching for them!

We said goodbye to our new friends and headed back to the jungle camp ready to settle down for the evening.

The following day we were up early to catch a longtail boat on Cheow Larn Lake which would take us to our next destination, the rainforest camp.

Tonight we would spend the night in another tent, although this time it would be floating on the lake in the middle of the rainforest.

This was a truly amazing experience and something we feel everyone should try and do at least once in their life.

Whilst staying here we had free rein to explore the surrounding area from our own little yellow canoe. We took one out and sat for hours watching monkeys jumping from tree to tree in the rainforest as the sun began to set.

Breathtaking!

After a quick swim in the lake and a bomb or two…

…we grabbed a G&T from the bar (yes, they had a bar!) and sat on our tent veranda to watch the last of the sun.

Such a perfect day.

There is no possible way to describe how the rainforest sounds at night, it is like nothing we have ever heard or experienced before, it’s definitely one for your bucket list!
