Exploring Thaikhun

Yesterday was a very wet and gusty day, but that didn’t stop us setting off with seven friends for a day trip to Oxford. With our brolllies at the ready we fought our way through the windy streets to sniff out a good spot to eat lunch, we ended up settling on a fun and casual eatery; Thaikhun.

As soon as we stepped through the door we instantly forgot the storm that was brewing outside and settled in at the bar for a drink and a selfie (it would be rude not too).

The interior decor was bright and busy, every inch of the restaurant was scattered with authentic looking Thai treasures and famous local commodities.

Our favourites were the Tuk Tuk nestled amongst the diners tables and the lights made from Singha beer bottles.

We were very quickly seated to our table, complete with a graffiti backdrop.

We loved the casual and chilled out vibe of the restaurant, the water was served in silver tin cups and the menus were paper placemats. Informal but welcoming… just what we needed.

We started with Plamuk Tod Prik Kleur (crispy squid sprinkled with black pepper and salt), Peek Gai Tod (the tastiest chicken wings we’ve ever eaten!) and Por Pla Sod Tofu (hand wrapped rice paper with veggies, tofu and herbs).

All were super delicious and got our tastebuds tingling for more.

For main we opted for Bah Mee Giew Nam Moo Deng, a BBQ pork soup with egg noodles and prawn and chicken wontons. The pork and wontons were exceptionally delicious but the soup definitely needed some extra seasoning… luckily we had plenty of soy and chilli on the table to shake things up a little.

On another note, the second main dish we ordered was Phad Kee Mao, one of the most delicious noodle dishes we’ve ever eaten! Soft rice Thai noodles with prawns, mussels and squid tossed in a spicy mix of chilli, garlic, oyster and soy sauce… we would highly recommend.

After the meal we sat, chatting and laughing, and taking in the staged Thai culture surrounding us.

Thaikhun, pronounced ‘tycoon’, celebrates the street food sellers in Thailand who are the real tycoons of the country. The word ‘Khun’ means ‘your’ in Thai and on the restaurants website they describe themselves as YOUR Thailand, a place to remind you of amazing personal journeys or to ignite the dream of exploring a new destination.

In our opinion, this restaurant is definitely worth exploring if you’re ever in the area.
